Ideas for my magazine name

I'm not going to lie, I really couldn't think of a magazine name easily. Here are some ideas. I'm going to ask people's opinions to see if theyre good or really really bad.

  • Interlude
  • Decibel
  • Shockwave
  • Rock Fuel

I thought for my tag line I could have something like "Ready, Set, ROCK".

Deciding which fonts to use

Last night I was downloading loads of fonts which I considered using. I got these fonts off www.fontspace.com. It took ages to actually find out how to put them into the actual fonts on the computer. I still haven't decided which one to use for definate, but here are the possibilities (I'll put font names next to them):
Rude Metal Shadow:
I liked the two 'Rude Metal' fonts because they were the closest I could find to a real Iron Maiden font.
Rude Metal:
You Murderer:
I like this also, in my opinion, it's too thin. I chose it because it was the closest I could get to Slipknot's real font.

Satan Posessed:
I'm not going to use this font because to me, it just doesn't suit the metal genre. It could maybe suit punk, but I'm not doing a punk magazine.

Face Your Fears:

Once again, this is quite similar to the Slipknot font.

Valium:
I really really like this one, but I dont think it would look good on my OFC, it looks too delicate to be representative of metal - so I wont use this.

Rock Garage:
I might use this font, but if I keep the font black it wouldn't look right because there would be too much black on my OFC (seeing as black is my main colour in the colour scheme). If i turned it a different colour, I may consider it.

Rock It:
I think this font is totally awesome! It looks like the sort you would find on a rock/metal magazine, e.g Rocksound.

Rock:
This font is really cool, but I dont think I will use it because it is too 'curvy'. It looks like it could suit a more classic rock magazine, or maybe soul or jazz..or something...but definately not metal.

Retro Rock Poster:
I'm seriously considering using this one.

Misfits:
I like this font because it is easily recognisable as being the font for The Misfits.
Hard Rock:
I like this because it has the faded, worn out look that is a part of the fashion side of metal.

Photos to be used as poster previews on my OFC

Here are some photos I have cropped down to be a suitable size for a preview of a poster included within the magazine.
I know when some are clicked on now, they will appear blurry. This doesn't matter because they will be a small size when on the OFC, so the blurryness wont show.

Jon Bon Jovi (Bon Jovi)

Corey Taylor (Slipknot/Stone Sour)

Gene Simmons (KISS)

Gerard Way (My Chemical Romance)

Simon Neil (Biffy Clyro)

Matt Bellamy (Muse)

I was going to use this one of Jon Bon Jovi, but I took the photo off the big screen, and consequently, has a huge line smack bam in the middle of the photo where the screen was able to split up. So I have decided against using this one.

The photos of Gerard Way, Simon Neil and Matt Bellamy look too good to be taken from a distance...thats because they weren't... I took the photos on the big screen.

Links to my Flickr, DeviantArt and YouTube pages

For some reason blogger wont link my blog to any of my accounts on Flickr, DeviantArt and Youtube. I'll post the links here :) I've uploaded these to prove the photos are actually mine :)

A Problem with my photos

When I took my photos to use, I stupidly used the digital zoom instead of the optical zoom because I wanted photos as close to their faces as possible. My camera is 12x optical zoom with a little extra digital zoom (I'll find out how much digital zoom tonight.) I realised after the concert that I should've stuck to optical zoom and just cropped the photos.

I've now realised that now I'll have to use these photos on my double page spread and not the OFC because they would be a bit too blurry, so i'll have to take other photos to use on the OFC.

I've set aside some photos to use as previews of the posters - I'll upload some photos when I get home because the files are on my laptop. I'll post the photos in a different post.

Intertextuality, Memes and Tropes.

Intertextuality is the way that the media deliberately or accidently references other texts within their own. Kerrang! often does this, I'll look in my Kerrang!s tonight and find an example.
I found an example: Kerrang! compared My Chemical Romance's album "Danger Days: The True Lives Of The Fabulous Killjoys" to Green Day's album, "American Idiot". They said it was "MCR's American Idiot". I was thinking I could include intertextuality in my magazine articles.

A meme is an element or idea that its transmitted or evolves in a culture. It is similar to a stereotype. In music, different fashion styles will be the meme. For example, for metal listeners, you'd expect them to have piercings and tattoos. I'm going to include original images of Synyster Gates from Avenged Sevenfold because he has piercings and tattoos.

A trope is a recurring element in art or culture. An example of this is in films. In fantasy films, medieval is a trope of this genre. For example, Harry Potter is a fantasy film, yet its locations are all based around medieval settings. Sometimes tropes are rewritten, this is called revisionism. Tropes generally endure because the audience prefer them, they are conventional. In my experience, it is conventional to use black on the OFC of a metal magazine, for example, in all my back issues of Kerrang!, black is the dominant colour used. I've posted before that I'm going to use the conventional colours of a rock/metal magazine (black, yellow and red), this research just inforced this idea.

Ideology

All genres of music have an ideology. An ideology is a set of ideas that suit a particular genre. Claude Levi Strauss' theory of binary oppositions applies here. In western cultures we often think in pairs of ideas that oppose eachother. E.g love/hate, war/peace.

Here are some stereotypical ideas of these genres:

Rock
  • More rebellious
  • Rawer, less over-produced
  • (pretend to) Care less about image
  • Sexual
  • Violence
  • Open drug/alcohol references
  • Anti Social
  • More aggressive
  • Self indulgent, more about the artists self expression
  • Niche audiences, outside mainstream
  • Swearing

Pop

  • More conformist
  • Slick, better produced
  • Conscious of 'good' image
  • Less obviously sexual/ euphemistic
  • No drugs/alcohol references
  • More passive
  • Universal messages
  • Mass audience, mainstream
  • Non-violent
  • Don't always swear

All of these results collected seem to be conventional of a music magazine.

Kerrang! Panel

Just thought I'd mention, recently I became part of the Kerrang! panel. Kerrang! sent me an email asking me if I'd like to become part of the panel - I jumped at the chance. This means every so often, I will help out Kerrang! by giving them my thoughts and ideas. I will be asked to fill out surveys to help improve the magazine, help promote Kerrang! and test out new ideas of theirs. All of this will be in aid of the magazine to make it the best it could possibly be.

Possible Photos To Use

I still have yet to choose which photos I will use, but here are a few I have considered using. I know there is A LOT but I will narrow them down.

I know Becky Tye and I went to the same My Chemical Romance concerts and used the same camera, but we took blank photos inbetween our turns of using my camera so we knew which ones were ours to use.

Just for the record, I have taken ALL of these photos, none borrowed from friends or anything :)
